The Ramblers Association now have a greatly improved website which is an exceptional rescource for all walkers, hykers and young families wanting to go for walks with young children. This site lists everything from historical walks to guided walks and really audious walks.

Find A Walk Near Me by Walking Britain is a truly excellent and free resource. Just enter where you are or where you would like to walk - and print out directions. The walks are graded and you can buy a specific map of the area at the same time. These are proper OS maps and weather proofed if required.

I always think of walking as one of the few activities you can do for free - and now you can with this guide!

Walking, Hiking and Outdoor Shops

The Original Factory Shop

45 High St, Ilfracombe EX34 9QB, UK – 01271 863740

Part of a chain.pretty much like the others.

The usual range of pretty much everything from these sorts of stores. Found what we wanted and it was good value. If you have a pushchair or wheelchair note that they have pretty narrow aisles

WalkingWorld.jpg
Another good one. Walkingworld has huge library of guides with a good selection of walks, of varying lengths and grades, pretty well anywhere in the UK. The walks come in an excellent format making them very easy to follow, with photographs to illustrate every important decision point and a proper Ordnance Survey map.

A modist annual subscription gives you unlimited access to all the walks. However you can Pay As Go by downloading indiviual walks.

Crucially you can also find walks France, Spain, Norway, Portugal and Australia!

Camping and Caravaning

Little Meadow Camp Site

The view from our pitch was stunning, what ever the weather. Really liked the 'alcove' layout of the whole site. The entrance by car is tricky as not sign posted before the turn off and a blind turn out onto the road. Pedestrian access is also tricky as there isn't a footpath all the way along the road (which cars travel very fast along) and the path from the site was treacherous on the one occasion we used it. A quiet site which is nice but 9pm a little early! As with other sites that charge per pitch for 2 people, not sure why I have to pay full pitch price + dog price per night although just me and the dog. I paid more than my 2 people companions.

Me and my husband stayed here for 5 nights. On arrival we were impressed with the lovely view from the site and the facilities were nice and clean, not mind blowing but considering they were free they were all you could ask for really. We didn't really feel like we had a very warm welcome, there was just a note left outside the reception hut telling us to camp where we liked and to call back at another time. The whole time throughout our stay we only ever saw anyone in the reception about 3 times between leaving notes on a chalkboard outside. If we had a problem we would've had the inconvenience of walking up to the farm and bothering the owner. Also hearing complaints about their guests wasn't very pleasant, if you're going to run a campsite at least show your face and show interest in your guests. On our last day, we stayed until 12:30, you're meant to check out at 11 but once again there was no one around to wish us fair well so we thought why not? 😂. Although a nice walk down to the local cosy pub (which does amazing food and give you a great welcome) we won't be visiting again.

Great little site. Fantastic views

Nice site to stay on. Shower block was ok not the best ive used. Large cubicals witch was handy for our family of 4 to use. Tent pitches could do with been abit more level. Amazing for walks around the area. Extreme wind when we stoped witch forced alot of people to take porches off there tents including myself.

Watermouth Valley Camping Park

Watermouth, Ilfracombe EX34 9SJ, UK – 01271 862282

We spent our 2 week holiday at Watermouth Valley campsite. We were staying in out trailer tent with our 15 and 12 year old sons. we were also with three other parties, all staying in tents. We found the owners to all be polite and extremely helpful. The ground we were allocated was nice and level and even though we did get some heavy rain there was no puddling. there are two shower blocks. One with 5We wet rooms and a larger block with separate shower cubicles. the shower cubicles have an area to change with a shelve to put your clothes with a shower curtain. We saw the showers being cleaned at intervals throughout the day. The beach behind the campsite was greatly enjoyed by us, especially by the kids. It's not sandy, like in the picture. It's shingle, but brill for a swim in a calmer sea and to take the dogs. Beware, the walk down is 240 steps, some quite steep, so don't go carrying lots of stuff! If you have dogs it's a great campsite with the coastal path running right through it. Overall it was clean, welcoming and very reasonably priced. Definitely recommend it.

A friendly family run site welcoming walkers of the SWCP . Beautiful valley stunning views of golden cove.
